Realtek RTL8812AU USB Wi-Fi adapter
Also known as RTL8812AU, USB3.0 802.11ac 1200M Adapter, AC1200 USB Wi-Fi
ControllableAI-assisted
Fully drivable by open code over the stock firmware.
Older Realtek 802.11ac dual-band USB Wi-Fi chip (AC1200), in many USB 3.0 dongles from TP-Link, D-Link, ASUS, Netgear, Edimax, Belkin, TRENDnet and others. Driven by the mainline Linux rtw88 driver since Linux 6.13 (automatic detection of all USB ids from 6.14); the chip loads a Realtek firmware file shipped in linux-firmware. No free replacement firmware exists yet. Writing one is possible in principle (as done before for Atheros open-ath9k-htc-firmware, Broadcom OpenFWWF) but nobody has started. The radio hardware is undocumented, and the firmware licence (LICENCE.rtlwifi_firmware.txt) forbids disassembling it, so a project would have to work clean-room from the open drivers (rtw88, Realtek's GPL vendor drivers) and from observing the chip, keep regulatory radio limits, and get legal advice first. Claim it here if you start.
Get started
One known way to put open firmware or software on this device, easiest first. Each one links to the project's own instructions.
Before you start- Back up your data and settings (and the stock firmware, when the guide says how).
- Check the exact model, hardware revision and firmware version against the guide: a close model may not work.
- Charge the battery or use a stable power supply; do not unplug during the install.
Use Linux rtw88 driver (nothing is flashed)
EasyNo tools, the device stays closed · Linux rtw88 driver
- You need

What "still non-free" and "cloud" mean
What stays proprietary or depends on the vendor's cloud once the project is in use, from the project's own documentation.
- vendor blobs
- proprietary files extracted from the stock firmware
- stock firmware
- the stock firmware stays on the device; the project only talks to it
- modem
- cellular modem firmware
- GPU
- graphics driver or firmware
- Wi-Fi
- Wi-Fi driver or firmware
- Bluetooth
- Bluetooth firmware
- camera
- camera driver or image processing
- sensors
- sensor hub or sensor drivers
- bootloader
- boot firmware
- other
- another proprietary part
- Cloud: none
- works fully locally
- Cloud: only at setup
- a vendor account is needed once, e.g. to obtain a local key
- Cloud: optional
- cloud features exist but are not needed
- Cloud: required
- does not work without the vendor's cloud
- Cloud: unknown
- not known
Verification
Not verified. A "verified on hardware" badge requires a replayable test (hardware-replay) run on a real device with a stated firmware version.
