Content policy
OpenDeviceDB exists so people can keep using hardware they own. To stay useful and legally sustainable, contributions must respect these rules.
Accepted
- Protocol descriptions written by contributors (message formats, sequences, captures you made yourself).
- Original code (SDKs, drivers, replacement firmware) under an open license.
- Links to external projects, teardowns, FCC documents and vendor documentation.
Refused
- Proprietary firmware images, vendor source code, extracted keys, certificates or credentials.
- Anything whose purpose is to defeat a regulatory safety or compliance function: drone Remote ID, geofencing / no-fly enforcement, radio power or frequency limits, vehicle emissions or safety systems, medical device safety interlocks.
- Ways to access devices or accounts you do not own, or other people’s data.
- Circumvention of DRM for the purpose of copyright infringement.
Legal basis
Reverse engineering for interoperability is protected in many jurisdictions (e.g. EU Directive 2009/24/EC art. 6, US DMCA §1201(f) and the triennial exemptions). This is not legal advice; contributors are responsible for complying with their local law.
